Unlock PDF Online — Remove Password Protection, Free and Private
Unlock PDF is a free, browser-based tool for removing the password from a PDF file you have access to. Drag in your protected PDF, enter the password that opens it, and save a copy that no longer requires a password to open. The original file on your device is not modified.
You need to know the password to unlock a PDF with CanaryPDF. The tool does not crack or bypass PDF password protection — if you've lost a password to a document you own, the file cannot be recovered. For documents shared with you, ask the sender for the password.
Your PDF stays on your device. CanaryPDF processes the file entirely in your browser using WebAssembly — there are no uploads to any server, no password transmission, and no account required. Closing the tab erases all working state.
Common reasons to remove a PDF password include: sharing documents internally where password enforcement is no longer needed, archiving owned documents for easier reading, processing PDFs with tools that don't handle encryption, or removing friction on files you open frequently.
Unlocking removes both the user password (required to open the file) and the owner password (which controls permissions like printing, copying, and editing). The resulting PDF has no restrictions. If you want to re-protect the file later with a different password, use the Protect PDF tool.
If you want to keep the password protection but change it to a new password, unlock the file here, then open the Protect PDF tool to set a new password. The Unlock PDF tool supports standard PDF encryption, including AES-128 and AES-256.
How to Unlock a PDF
